Banned Go Daddy Lola Superbowl Commercial
What is offensive about a retired football star transitioning into a career as a successful Internet entrepreneur? That’s the question Go Daddy is asking viewers about the one Go Daddy Super Bowl commercial that was not approved to air in this year’s big game.
“Of the five commercial concepts we submitted for approval this year, this NEVER would’ve been my pick for the one that would not be approved,” exclaimed Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons. “This is about a guy who starts an online business and hits the jackpot. I just don’t think 'Lola' is offensive, in fact we didn’t see this one coming – we were absolutely blindsided!”
The 30-second commercial is narrated by Go Daddy Girl Danica Patrick and features a character named “Lola,” who launches a new career as a fashion designer with an online store.
Parsons is revealing “Lola” online to see what the public thinks. “I predict most people will say 'Lola' is hilarious! To critics I would say, we finally produced a Super Bowl commercial that speaks to our core business – helping people be successful online.”
A Focus on the Family commercial has been approved to air in this year’s Super Bowl and sparked controversy because it advocates a politically motivated message. The conservative watchdog organization, Media Research Center, however, defends the Christian group’s commercial saying networks have approved “Go Daddy ads, which typically feature big-breasted women,” and are presumably more offensive than a religious-oriented message.
“Lola is not a ‘big-breasted woman’ – Lola is a big, flamboyant, effeminate, lovable man,” Parsons replied.
The domain name registrar and Web hosting provider purchased slots in the first and fourth quarters of the Super Bowl. Go Daddy’s “Movies” spot has already been selected and approved as one of this year’s Super Bowl commercials, but now Go Daddy needs to declare which other ad it intends to air. Go Daddy Productions shot five different concepts with a variety of endings.
“We’ve accepted we have to go with another option – one that’s been approved and one that is still 100 percent GoDaddy-esque,” Parsons promised, referring to a term the media coined to describe Go Daddy commercials as “fun, edgy and slightly inappropriate.”

“We’re delighted that Shauna will be with us in Miami. She has a loyal following of fans who keep up with all of her exploits and she looks forward to meeting many of them at Tootsie’s,” said Steven Hirsch, founder/co-CEO of Vivid.
“This is definitely shaping up as the ultimate Super Bowl party,” said Ed Anakar, director of operations for Rick’s Cabaret International. “Tootsie’s Cabaret has been called the best strip club in Miami and it’s famous for the beautiful entertainers who perform completely nude, as well as our warm hospitality, great bars and fabulous food service. Kentucky Derby Museum Plans for Grand Reopening
The Kentucky Derby Museum has taken the next step toward a comeback from last summer’s serious flood damage, unveiling artist renderings and details of new exhibits planned as part of a $5.5 million renovation.
A completely remodeled Derby Museum will feature exhibits with greater interactivity and technological advances that will “far surpass” what had been offered at the venue, according to executive director Lynn Ashton.
“Everybody wants to have that hands-on experience,” she said.
New museum exhibits will allow patrons to participate in a virtual horse race, call their own Derby “Karaoke style” and learn how to place bets, whether they’re based on superstition or more scientific methods.
The first floor of the reworked space will house displays that focus on aspects of the Derby experience. Exhibits will showcase hats and fashion and will include space where fans share their personal experiences.
The second floor will document the life of a Thoroughbred racehorse from birth to the finish line. It will include stories from owners, trainers and jockeys.
Designer worked on previous renovation
Museum officials have tapped Gallagher & Associates, a Silver Spring, Md.-based architectural firm that specializes in exhibit design, to lead the project.
The firm performed a similar role in the creation of the recently opened Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Hong Kong Racing Museum. It also has done exhibit design work for projects at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
Bruce Lightbody, director of Gallagher’s San Francisco office, is leading the Derby Museum project. He oversaw the museum’s last renovation in 1999 and 2000 while working for another firm.
Lightbody “is no stranger to Louisville,” Ashton said. “He is no stranger to the museum.”
His experience and knowledge of the facility will help keep work on schedule, she added. The renovation project is on a tight deadline, with a reopening set for April 18 — two weeks prior to this year’s Derby.
Lightbody called the looming deadline “daunting,” but he said “a lot of coordination” among his firm, general contractor Sullivan & Cozart Inc., and local architect Luckett & Farley Architects, Engineers and Construction Managers Inc. will help the project run smoothly.
All of the firms have previous experience working at the museum.
“That’s really saved a lot of time,” Lightbody said. Without that prior experience, “the learning curve would have been too great.”
The Derby Museum has been closed since Aug. 4 when heavy rains caused significant flooding in the area.
The facility, located on the grounds of Churchill Downs, sustained more than $4 million in damage from floodwater and sewage.
Funding for the $5.5 million renovation is expected to come from a grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation Inc., contributions from the Thoroughbred industry and $800,000 from insurance coverage, according to Wendy Treinen, the museum’s director of communications.
The amount of the Brown Foundation grant has not yet been determined, she said.
Workers scrambled the day of the flood to save most items of historical significance at the museum, but all exhibits were damaged.
The museum has been gutted, with all displays, carpeting and interior walls removed.
Most of the new exhibits are being constructed in Virginia and will be delivered to the museum in the coming months, according to Ashton.
“We are going to be so much fun for children and adults alike,” she said.
