NFL Bear News

With the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs wrapped up, Rex Grossman was kept on the sidelines, and watched the Bears lose to an inspired Vikings team 34-10 in Minneapolis. Robbie Gould put Chicago in front 3-0 with a field goal late in the first quarter, but the Bears (11-5) gave up the next 27 points. "Some of the things that we accomplished are going to be overshadowed by what happened," Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. "And that's disappointing. But the truth is we have bigger fish to fry, and that's the playoffs." On Jan. 14 or 15, Chicago will play host to Tampa Bay, New York or Carolina in the NFC divisional playoffs.

Chicago Bears Power Rankings: End of Regular Season

BY ESPN at #5
We understand the concern over Rex Grossman getting hurt in a meaningless game, but couldn't he use some extra playing time, too? He still has thrown only 39 passes this year.

By Sportsline at #8
The Bears get a bye this week, then play at home next week in the divisional round. With Rex Grossman back, they are dangerous.
Da Bears

If they play Tampa Bay in the second round, I fly to Vegas right away to tap out on the Bears minus, uh, well it'll be a big number, let's say minus seven.

By Yahoo's Charles Robinson at #4
Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera could interview for as many as six head coaching gigs: Detroit, Minnesota, Oakland, St. Louis and Green Bay.

With Grossman back they may be super tough

Remember when the Chicago Bears defense was going to set all kinds of records? Week 17 took care of that problem, didn't it? NEXT: BYE

Overheard: Rose Bowl

The USC Trojans play the Texas Longhorns for the national title today in the Rose Bowl. Both team mascots are controversial.
Vegetarians object to a mascot which represents the beef industry, and the Catholic church objects to birth control.

Vagus Ferguson scores three touchdowns for the Irish as Notre Dame routs unbeaten and top-ranked Texas 38-10, in the Cotton Bowl, throwing the national championship equation into a state of confusion.

Notre Dame, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, and Penn State all end up at 11-1, but when the final poll is released, this will be the game that catapults the Irish from fifth before the Cotton Bowl to #1 and the consensus national title.

Charlie Weis Accepts Eddie Robinson Award for Notre Dame

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis received the Eddie Robinson Award as the nation's top college football coach on Sunday. The award, given by the Football Writers Association of America, was presented at the final Fiesta Bowl news conference. Weis' Fighting Irish meet Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday.
Coach Weis
Weis guided Notre Dame to a 9-2 record in his first season at the school after being lured from the New England Patriots, where as offensive coordinator he helped the team win three Super Bowls in four seasons. "I'll accept the award, but on behalf of the University of Notre Dame, not on behalf of Charlie Weis," he said.

He praised the school for providing him with the means to be successful. "It all started after they hired me," Weis said, "giving me the resources to go hire what I feel was the best group of assistant coaches. Those guys, together with me, I thought, provided some pretty good guidence for a great group of kids who really stepped up and had an admirable year."
